Hastens

No matter how perfect everything else might be, at the end of the day, it is all about the bed and Hastens makes the very best in the world.  If you have not experienced a Hastens bed, let the first time be at Hotel Bel-Air.

Hästens, which was founded in 1852, is Sweden’s oldest manufacturer of beds and mattresses. The company started out by primarily making saddles and carriage furniture. Back then, the main filling material used for saddles was horsehair, which was also used for mattresses. In the beginning, mattress making at Hästens was only a sideline to the main business of creating saddles, something the craftsmen did only upon a client’s request. Eventually, the demand for horsehair mattresses increased at such a rate that making beds became the main business of the company. The Hästens name (‘Häst’ is Swedish for horse) and logo are references to its origins as a saddle-making company.

Craftsmanship and quality are the focus at Hästens, where beds are still made by hand using only natural filling materials: horsehair, cotton, linen, wool, and flax. Hästens beds are free of all harmful chemicals and other materials that could in any way be detrimental to either the human body or the environment. The fire retardant used for the Hästens beds is a salt-based solution rather than the commonly used toxic chemicals used by other companies. Additionally, they are completely free of any foam rubber or latex, materials that often age, become rigid and eventually crumble. The all-natural ingredients of Hästens beds maintain ventilation, allowing the beds and mattresses to breathe, creating the perfect environment for a restful nights sleep. The beds are visually distinctive for the checked cotton that covers each and every one—available in the iconic blue-and-white Hästens colour way and a variety of other hues.

Hästens beds are currently available in 23 markets, including the U.S. where the beds are now sold in 21 stores across nine states, from East coast to West. By 2008, Hästens will have 100 stores in the country.
